Department of Community and Public Health

Established in 2015, the Department of Community and public health exists to promote community health and well-being primarily through teaching, research, and community service. We are anchored in the mission of the university, which is to provide high-standard training, and engage in quality research and outreach for socio-economic transformation and sustainable development. The department has both national and international students and welcomes persons from different disciplines and this has promoted a healthy intercultural and inter-professional space that fosters growth and innovation. Department of Nursing

The Department of Nursing is part of the Faculty of Health Sciences, found in Mbale City, Eastern Uganda. The Department currently runs one program, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BNS) degree program which has been running since 2015 and graduated its pioneer graduands in 2019. Mbale Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) is the main teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health Sciences. However, there are many more Health Centers within Mbale City and surrounding Districts where students go for placement, especially during the Community-Based Education, Research, and Service (COBERS). Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics

The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics is one of the core Biomedical (preclinical) Departments of the Faculty of Health Science established in 2013 at the inception of the medical school. It is actively involved in the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing health-related programs. These include a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Anesthesia, Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine, Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health, and Master of Public Health. Since Pharmacology is the “science of drugs” while therapeutics is the “art and science of treating patients”, the Department strives to equip its students with sufficient knowledge, skills, and competencies in basic and clinical pharmacology, toxicology, and therapeutics to ensure that the graduates can provide the expected standard of patient care both nationally and internationally. Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Greetings and we welcome everyone to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Busitema University. The department is housed at Busitema University Mbale campus and Mbale RRH serves as the teaching hospital.   Currently, we run two undergraduate courses for medical students as approved by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery curriculum and where necessary offer support in terms of teaching and supervision of undergraduate students of nursing and the postgraduate students of Masters of Public Health(MPH). Department of Pediatrics and Child Health

The Department of Paediatrics and child health was established in 2015. You will realize that this was three years after the Faculty of Health Sciences had opened its doors in 2013. Prior to that, the students had been studying basic sciences. When they completed and passed basic sciences courses, they were inducted into active clinical Pediatrics and child health. The first intake group was 13 students; these were expected to rotate through the five sub-disciplines of pediatrics e.g. general pediatrics, nutrition, neonatology, emergency pediatrics, and community pediatrics. These are five to seven (for 5th years) weeks rotations then students sit their end-of-course examinations and must pass before rotating to the next discipline.
