Department of Microbiology and Immunology

Welcome to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Busitema University Faculty of Health Sciences. I am honored to serve as the Acting Head of the Department of a distinguished group of faculty and to oversee exciting development in the physical and research infrastructure of the Department. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology integrates many disciplines concerned with the study of the transmission, immunobiology, and pathogenesis of bacterial, parasitic, viral, fungal, immunological, and infectious diseases of public health importance.

Public health problems can best be addressed by understanding basic biological mechanisms and looking at disease from a One Health Approach. The Department is continually evolving to meet new research opportunities and the changing needs of public health. The department has continued to attract highly trained additional faculty to complement our existing strengths in microbial pathogenesis, molecular microbiology, mycology, fungal immunology, and infection modeling. We are now able to study disease at the population, organismal, cellular a molecular level, and grow from strength to strength with the support of our collaborators. We also pay keen attention to the role of bacterial endosymbionts in fungal pathogenesis.
Our Departmental goals not only include research on complex scientific problems but also training the next generation of talented young microbiologists through our research and teaching. In line with the same, the department has designed several postgraduate courses which include; Master of Science in Microbiology, a Postgraduate diploma in Mycology and Fungal Immunology, a Master of Science in Mycology and Fungal Immunology, and a PhD in Mycology and Fungal Immunology. We boast of our new capacity to sequence bacteria, fungi, and viruses which has improved our research capacity and we are particularly excited with our growing strength in Mycology and working very hard to set up the best Mycology laboratory in Uganda by 2022.
