Graduate Programmes
The MPH programme at Busitema University is one of the vehicles that play a critical role in the economic and social development of Uganda through the training of distinguished health professionals with competencies to serve underserved and rural populations. Master of Medicine (Paediatrics and child health)
The MPC program was nurtured in 2014; after the realization that there was an acute shortage of specialized Paediatricians willing to work outside Kampala. So, the faculty wanted to generate homegrown specialists with rural affinity other than urban affinity which was get rich quickly driven. Under the mentorship of Prof Waako Paul, the department under my pioneering started developing a training curriculum for the course. It took us 2-years for UNCHE to accredit the faculty to conduct this training. Suffice it to state that the course is a hybrid course that took into consideration the similar programs run by MEPI-MESAU affiliated Universities in Uganda and South Sudan. Undergraduate Programmes
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BNS)
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BNS) degree program has been running since 2015 and graduated its pioneer graduands in 2019. Mbale Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) is the main teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health Sciences. This is a four-year academic program. Every academic year shall have two 17-week semesters (15 weeks teaching time and 2 weeks examination time) and a 10-week recess term (8 weeks learning time and 2 weeks examination time). Read More
Upcoming programmes
The Bachelor of Pharmacy is a four years programme with intensive training to enhance students with competencies and skills relevant to the practice of pharmacy in the fourth industrial revolution (4IR). In particular, undertake roles to meet Uganda’s national and global pharmaceutical development goals specified by the International Federation of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FIP, goals 1-24), the SDGs (goal 3 and 9), and Vision 2040 of Uganda articulated in the National Development Plan (NDP-3), that call for modernization, industrialization, digitalized pharmacy, innovation, leadership, value addition, among others. Thus, new components pertaining to 4IR skills are integrated into the Bachelor Pharmacy curriculum including digital pharmacy, research and innovation design, management and leadership as well as an emphasis on work-integrated learning. The curriculum focuses more on approaches to assess for competencies rather than knowledge, through work-based assessments, research, and innovation projects, as well as problem and project-based learning, teaching, and assessments. A student-centered blended mode of learning, teaching, and assessment is emphasized throughout the curriculum, alongside internationalization. Master of Pharmacology (Drug discovery and development)
The Master of Pharmacology is a two-year program run in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Busitema University with support from relevant departments (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, Public Health, and Internal medicine). The focus of this program is on the optimization of natural therapeutics and their commercialization in and outside the country through training professionals with requisite knowledge and skills in drug discovery and development. The program is envisioned to enroll its first set of learners in the academic year 2023/24. Throughout the entire program, courses have been designed in such a way that much emphasis is put on developing hands-on skills among the graduates through the various practical sessions, laboratory and field exposures as well as the industrial attachment. It is envisaged that this program will skill graduates and make them competent in the field of drug discovery and development, particularly from the rich natural resources in the country. These professionals are also predicted to contribute to the workforce in the growing pharmaceutical industry sector in the East African region and beyond, as well as contribute personnel to academia, both in the biomedical and clinical fields. The program specifically seeks to produce a five-star pharmacologist with key attributes in research, innovation, entrepreneurship, education, and leadership in drug discovery and development.
