Faculty partnership and collaboration

Partnerships Expand Clinical Training and Research

The faculty reported a USD 1.1 million research grant to study sunflower-seed-oil massage and survival among premature infants in Uganda, as well as a partnership with International Hospital Kampala to enhance anaesthesia training.Other collaborations support clinical placements, medical educators, community-based education, continuing professional development, postgraduate training, research supervision, and online learning.

Glucotak and Tazcov natural products

Glucotak and Tazcov Advance Natural-Products Innovation

Glucotak and Tazcov are two products developed by the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. During the 2023/2024 reporting period, both products were progressing through different stages of standardisation.The work reflects the faculty’s strategic focus on natural-products research and innovation.

Community Engagement Strengthens Health Sciences Education

Faculty staff and students continued community-based education and outreach during 2023/2024, including community health activities, COBERS placements, a pre-eclampsia engagement on Open Gate FM, and outreach in Namatala supported by Seed Global Health.These activities enrich students’ education while contributing to community well-being and preparing compassionate, community-oriented health professionals.

Faculty Research Dissemination Day Brings Research to Practice

The Faculty of Health Sciences, supported by the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care and the Elgon Centre for Health Research and Innovation, held a full-day Research Dissemination Day on 28 November 2023 at the Human Manpower Development Centre.Twenty-one presentations were delivered: thirteen by bachelor’s or master’s students and eight by senior researchers and university staff. Sessions covered chronic illness, maternal and adolescent health, community health, mental health and well-being, and surgery and perioperative care. The event attracted 46 participants from the community, Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, Busitema University, ELCHRI, MCRI, and SAFRI.

Professor Wandabwa handed over the Dean’s office to Professor Dan Kibuule at a function held in the faculty video-conferencing room on 18 January 2024.Professor Kibuule’s leadership agenda emphasises a research-driven faculty, community-based education, stronger research and innovation teams, and expanded postgraduate training.

Faculty of Health Sciences Celebrates 10 Years

On 18 January 2024, the Faculty of Health Sciences celebrated ten years since its establishment. The event recognised founding Dean Professor Paul Waako and founding staff for their role in building the faculty.The anniversary reflected on expanded curricula, new specialisations, and stronger partnerships with local hospitals.
