The Faculty of Health Sciences is building a research-driven culture focused on public health, maternal and child health, nutrition and health management, infectious diseases, perioperative and critical care, and natural-products research and innovation.

- Infectious-disease epidemiology and biostatistics fellowship training in Africa.
- Malaria epidemiological, pathophysiological, and intervention studies in highly endemic Eastern Uganda.
- The NIHR Global Health Group on Perioperative and Critical Care.
- An integrated electronic maternity registry at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
- Assessment of Uganda’s capacity to manufacture, procure, and distribute essential medicines.
- An integrated HEARTS-based strategy for hypertension, diabetes, and HIV management in Eastern Uganda.
- Preclinical evaluation and standardisation of antidiabetic prototypes.
- Pharmaceutical synthesis research using cassava-derived inputs.
Research dissemination and innovation
The Faculty Research Dissemination Day held on 28 November 2023 featured 21 presentations across chronic illness, maternal and adolescent health, community health, mental health and well-being, and surgery and perioperative care. Natural-products work included Glucotak and Tazcov, which were progressing through standardisation during the reporting period.
Young researcher recognition
Ritah Nantale and Brendah Nambozo received Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene awards, while Kennedy Kiyimba was recognised for research on prescribing and quality of care for geriatric patients living with HIV and other chronic conditions in Eastern Uganda.
