Busitema University established the Faculty of Health Sciences in Mbale City in 2013 to address health-workforce inequities in Eastern Uganda. It is the first medical school in Eastern Uganda, and its pioneer cohort was admitted in the 2013/2014 academic year.
The faculty combines innovative health-professions education with research and community-based education, and works with ministries, district local governments, hospitals, and private partners to broaden students’ clinical and community experience.
Strategic focus
The faculty is building an innovative and distinguished research base in public health, maternal and child health, nutrition and health management, and natural-products research and innovation. Its programmes are designed to improve health care in primary care and specialist settings.
Community accountability
Teaching and research remain anchored in community-based education. The faculty’s partnerships and clinical training sites help students serve underserved communities while developing the knowledge, skills, and professional values required for high-quality patient care.
