Teaching & Learning

The department is the home of the first Bachelor of Science in Anaesthesia (BScA.) training program in East Africa. The BScA. is a undergraduate non-physician anaesthetist training program tailored to remedy anaesthesia workforce challenges facing the region and Africa as a whole.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care also coordinates and conducts training in perioperative care, emergency medicine, and critical care for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) students, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students as well as postgraduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Housed at Busitema University’s Mbale campus, the department works hand in hand with the Department of Anaesthesia of Mbale Regional Referral Hospital which is the major teaching hospital of the faculty located on site with the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The department in collaboration with the Association of Anesthesiologists of Uganda (AAU) has partnered with other reputable hospitals across the country. These include: CURE Children’s Hospital in Mbale, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu, Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital in Wakiso, and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. These hospitals, as teaching sites enable the department provide competence based clinical training for students. The students also benefit from the expertise and clinical experience available at these different training hospitals across the country that ensures that our graduates are prepared to work anywhere in the country and beyond.
