Dr. Gavamukulya Yahaya (PhD, MSc, BSc)

PROFILE

Dr Gavamukulya is a Biochemist who earned both his PhD and MSc in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the Pan African University (PAU) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kenya having been a two-time winner of the Prestigious Pan African University African Union Commission Scholarships. He holds a First-Class Bachelor of Science Honors Degree (Biochemistry and Botany) from Makerere University Kampala. His PhD research focused on the use of green nanobiotechnology to develop novel anticancer agents. He is currently a Senior Lecturer and Head Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as the Block 1 Coordinator for Basic Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Busitema University. His research interests include Cancer biology, natural products and bioprospecting, molecular diagnostics and green nanobiotechnology all of which are steeped towards the discovery of novel compounds, drug formulations and point of care testing. He is a founding member of the Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society of Uganda, a member of Natural Products Research for Eastern and Central Africa (NAPRECA), the inaugural Secretary General of the Pan African University Alumni Association, A Global Mendeley Advisor and Certified UpToDate Trainer. He has over 25 publications in peer reviewed journals, has presented at both local and international conferences and seminars, has a filed patent (AP/P/2019/011514) and utility model (AP/U/2020/000179) with the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), supervised 3 graduate students to completion and participated in mentorship and supervision of a number of undergraduate students. Dr Gavamukulya is currently the Team Leader of the Busitema University Hand Sanitizers Project and the Lead Biochemist for the SARS-CoV2 in vitro projects at Uganda Virus Research Institute, a collaboration between Busitema University (BUNaPReG), Uganda Virus Research Institute and Natural Chemotherapeutic Research Institute under the Presidential Scientific Initiative On Epidemics (PRESIDE). His career objective is to acquire a challenging position in research and / or teaching, as well as outreach and to be a leader in research and teaching programs with a passion to innovate for sustainable development.
